ARTIST STATEMENT.
We see what we want to see. We perceive the world around us in our own way and sometimes it is far from reality. We have got used to rely on our feelings and emotions when we see or judge something and sometimes this leads to the misinterpretation of the things around us, because feelings and emotions can’t be objective. In my exhibition Another Perspective I want to keep pushing on the relationship between digital and non-digital art, I’m interested in the conversation between old and new technology. Is it true that new technology is changing art?

From a conceptual point of view I want to raise awareness on the issue of North African Immigration to Europe. We see what we see thanks to light (knowledge). While the image I present is easy to read, still sometimes we perceive that same image and judge it without looking for all the information. Knowledge is to look at the world from a different point of view: changing our perspective can make the things we see change their meaning.

What were the goals of this project? 
I believe that any modern artist needs to push the art forward, inventing, defining new paradigms of expression with powerful meanings. It can be done using new technology, or researching new techniques with old media. It is about the experience the artist delivers to the public – whether it is provocative, whether it changes how the viewer thinks, feels and views the world. This is what really matters, and it has nothing to do with the techniques that the artist chooses to use. Just as the development of acrylic paints in the 20th century did not mean that oil paints or even the practice of creating one’s own paint from pigments fell out of practice, so it is with technology. Just as some artists paint in oils only or acrylics only, some create their work digitally. Image editing and graphic design software programs are yet another tool to add to the artist’s palette. This is why in my work I try to use a wide range of media: from printmaking to digital fabrication, from graphic design and typography to motion graphic.

What elements of the project contribute best to these goals? What elements of the project hamper the realization of these goals?

For this last project I would like to design something on my computer using Photoshop and Illustrator, them import the artwork into rhino and visual mill. This will allow me to be very detailed in my final piece, something that I cannot achieve using manual techniques. I want to use the potential of a CNCmilling machine to engrave wood and print it using printmaking techniques.

I worked on 2 images representing the journey of immigrants in the Mediterranean Sea trying to reach European coasts, and turned them into grayscale, than converted them in bitmap using lines.

I think this is a valid technique to get details and keep this very old style computer images from the 80s-90s effect, even if the final product will be realized using a printmaking wood press. Then I imported my illustrator file into rhino and Visual Mill and I engraved the wood board. Below you can see images of the wood board, the digital wood cut print and detail of the print.

Using the same technique I engraved a 20×20 inches of Plexiglas with the same image. This piece is going to be enlighted with a clear light bulb so that the viewer can see the projected shadow on the wall. I will hang this piece on the wall with angle brackets I designed in rhino and 3d printed, so that the viewer can move not only the light bulb, but even the piece, rotating it to get different shadow projections (I will write a whole post just about this part, unfortunately this plexiglas piece was missing during this exhibit…I found it!)

My idea is focus the attention on the relationship between the object and its representation. Differently from the Renaissance Period, where, after Brunelleschi and Leon Battista Alberti’s perspective studies, the artists wanted to represent reality through perspective, I would like to negate that. I want to investigate the non-correspondence between reality and representation of reality.

We see a woman in water, she is peaceful, is she relaxing in a pool? Maybe. The second, third and fourth woodcuts, like in a storyboard show the same woman drowning in that same water. And at the same time the perspective of each woodcut changes so much so that we don’t even recognize the face of the woman anymore.

More, the position of the viewer in the space of this exhibition changes the shape and the perception of each piece. Standing very close to the first woodcut doesn’t allow the viewer to notice and read the image properly. In experiencing the second, third and fourth woodcuts, since I decided to depict the images using anamorphic projection, the position of the viewer in functional, but not necessary to a correct perspective view of the piece. To tide together my subject matter with my investigation of perspective I built a rotating lamp, with a simple light bulb and waves artwork printed on acetate. The heat from the bulbs inside the cylinders made the water artwork rotate giving the viewer the idea of being underwater.

The most challenging aspect of this project was the possibilities that I got from each print. The engraving in wood and in Plexiglas went very smooth, probably because I already tested these methods in previous assignments and works. What I got from each print was the unpredictable aspect of the project that I learned to work with and enjoy. I really feel this is just the beginning of an exploration.
