Experimental Video: Short Movie “Crazy”

Here is my first assignment for the Motion Graphic class. The short’s title is Crazy, and portraits the story of a (maybe) crazy person and a little trip in his mind.

The techniques I used are Pixelation (stop motion with human figures), Rotoscoping, and Live Action. I shot the pictures and the live action with my ipad and Mac Pro, edited with Photoshop (rotoscoping and color adjusting) and assembled in images sequences with Quicktime Pro 7. All the sequences were then imported into Final Cut Pro X where I added the music and matched with my images, worked more on the colors and transitions, insert effects and credits. I design one scene using Flash and realizing a frame by frame animation using masks and rotoscoping effects.

For the soundtrack I decided to use the song “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley which has those characteristic of repetition I was looking for, I can almost define it a spiral song where the verse are all inter-changable and similar one to the other and the chorus is this distinguish part used almost as punctuation.

From an esthetic point of view I tried to be consistent with my interest in fractals and spirals even for this short movie; for example I zoommed in some photos in some key scene to give the sense of repetition and seriality but adding a deeper and deeper meaning each shot.

My only actor is Daniele Tavani, whom I really want to thank for his time and dedication to the project.
